Origen's On First Principles is perhaps the first major systematic or philosophical theology in church history. Origen combines piety and fidelity to the faith with creativity and bold exploration.

His more speculative ideas are presented tentatively and humbly. The introductions to this edition, especially by de Lubac, set the stage well for /5(28). On the First Principles. Origen's On the First Principles was the first ever systematic exposition of Christian theology.

He composed it as a young man between and while he was still living in Alexandria. Fragments from Books and of Origen's Greek original are preserved in Origen's Philokalia. Now I think some such view is indicated in the Psalms, when the prophet says, My eyes have seen your imperfection; by which the mind of the prophet, examining with keener glance the first principles of things, and separating in thought and imagination only between matter and its qualities, perceived the imperfection of God, which certainly is.
